The NEW Leadership
Have you been following the ‘sensible path’?
Throughout life we’ve been taught not to disobey authority, to do as we are told and follow the ‘sensible path’. For many, the sensible path is about having the ‘right’ education, the right career and of course, the perfect partner. All of which should be safe, dependable and predictable.
There is now a new feeling in the air: safe, dependable and predictable was perhaps right for others, but for us, it’s too hard a route to follow. We’re dissatisfied. The promotion at work doesn’t help the growing pain inside; the fear of losing the old is strong but we procrastinate over new opportunities. Our bets are placed on the return to normal because we think “It will be OK when…”
So why do we procrastinate?
Why do we wait for the seemingly impossible to happen and low-grade depression build? Why do we worry over finances and building ‘the dream business’ when nothing seems to happen? We do this because we’ve been trained for a long time to make sure we don’t stand out, and just operate within what’s comfortable. However, the reality is that we’re not comfortable at all. We know safety, routine and security; security which has been based around obedient invisibility. Deep down, we’re still looking for direction and to be parented in the way we, as sensitives, need.
The World is Changing…
Whether we like it or not. We’re going through the biggest change in more than a hundred years. The comfort zone has gone. We might not have caught up yet, but it’s gone. The ‘job for life’, the consistency of following particular frameworks over and over again, it’s all gone. We are now entering a new phase. This new phase will last far beyond our lifetime so we had better get used to it. This new phase is both personal and professional. Our lives will be taken over by the desire for personal growth and purpose.
There is a new safety zone, the zone of innovation, deep connection and the cycle of letting go and re-birth.”
The new economy is about real caring. This means caring enough to make a change; to contribute over and above our own needs. However, for us to really feel and contribute, we have to move beyond our own selfish needs. Our selfish needs keep us in the patterns of not only our lifetime, but that of our family history. For many years, my work has been about exploring the past in order to understand a person’s present while having a view into their future. My observations have led me to conclude that there are a handful of reasons why we struggle to progress and really engage with our leadership role in society.
The reasons are co-dependence, lack of commitment and a deep need to avoid pain.”
The heaviest burden is co-dependence. This keeps us stuck in the status quo, looking for rules to follow and worrying about what others think. It keeps us from grasping the bull by the horns and tackling our deepest worries and regrets.
This is what the selfish self looks like; it hasn’t anything in its world bigger than itself.”
The good news is, as a sensitive person you’ve had enough. You’re ready to make your next move.
